Photo Journal: Doors of Marrakech
A visual meditation on history, mystery, and Moorish design.
Doors are a beloved subject for travel photographers, and Marrakech is a dream for this creative theme. Carved from wood or ancient brick, adorned with Moorish motifs, studded with iron bolts or brass knockers, and painted in hues like rust red, Majorelle blue, and saffron yellow…Every shape, size, and texture can be found.
Wandering through Marrakech’s medina feels like stepping back in time. Founded in 1062 as a caravan outpost, the city’s narrow alleyways have welcomed countless travelers over the centuries. While photographing this colorful city, I often wondered what stories these old doors hold.
Marrakech is a city of visual contradictions. Its dusty clay walls and weathered doors can appear stark or uninviting, but many are portals to another world. Step inside and you’ll find tranquil courtyards, the gentle sound of fountains, and the intricate beauty of traditional riad design.
